Awesome Autumn
Adventure Kingsway joins Out to
Learn at Kinark
"Out to Learn staff
were excellent" - Sherri Field, Kingsway College.
"
Kinark staff were very good at giving
subtle, individual attention and encouragement to
kids when they need it. They were all very
positive and also "quick on their feet" to make
decisions" - Sherri Field, Kingsway
College
Four years
ago, David Kim of Kingsway College School
(Etobicoke) booked a field trip with Out to
Learn and they have been joining us at Kinark
Outdoor Centre ever since. Grades
6,7,and 8 enjoyed a winter visit for
the first three years and in
2009, 68 grade 7 and 8 students and
staff made the trip in
mid-September. Kingsway coordinator, Sherri
Field, appreciates the wide variety of programs
and activities available to them in the
fall. Out to Learn partners with Kinark to
offer programming that helps achieve curriculum
outcomes, develop student
character, and promote active and
sustainable living.
For
example, When it Rains,
It Pours, a program well suited to
Grade 8, fosters an understanding of water,
watersheds, and human impacts on our water
systems . With the use of a variety of hands-on
activities including water funnel models, students
learn the dynamics of watersheds and the art and
science of water management. A vist to a
local water control dams, a hydroelectric facility
and the Minden Whitewater Preserve helps students
understand how the knowledge is applied in the
real world.
Other
programs taken by Kingsway included Species at
Risk, Wetland
Ecology,
Introduction to GPS, Murky Waters
(Eutrophication),
Mammal CSI, high ropes, climbing wall,
kayaking, day canoe trip, day hiking trip, and
campfire.
Kingsway
College has already made a booking for September
2010.

Introducing
Paul....
Working
biologist and a great educator
" Paul is super keen and that
rubs off on kids!!!" - Sherri Field,
Kingsway College
"Paul should be a
teacher. I am a little jealous" - Sandy
Long, Monck P.S.
When working with
students, Paul is engaging and passionate about
his subject material. He employs a variety
of teaching methods that capture the attention and
participation of his audience.
In addition to being a
very effective educator, Paul knows his
stuff. Paul is a experienced
consulting ecologist who conducts floral and
faunal inventories, environmental impact
assessments and wetland evaluations. In
Ontario, he is working closely with the Ontario
Ministry of Natural Resources, Ducks Unlimited
Canada and municipal governments, mapping wetlands
and developing protocol to ensure wetlands are
properly protected. Paul is a Managed Forest
Plan Approver and develops forest management plans
for private landowners. Paul directs and
oversees all aspects of studies and research
projects, as well as field work and data
collection, conducted by Glenside
Ecological Services Limited.
Paul's international
experience includes developing an ecological
monitoring program to minimize the impact of the
clearance of unexploded ordnance from the Panama
Canal rangelands; developing a database for the
Monterey Bay Sea Otter Rehabilitation program in
California; and conducting radio-telemetry for a
guanaco parental investment study in Chile.
Need we say more, Paul is
the real deal.
