"Children
have a natural affinity towards nature. Dirt,
water, plants and small animals attract and hold
children's attention for hours, days, even a lifetime." (Robin C.
More and Herb H.

Outdoor Education for
Curriculum
The experience goes a long way!
"More than what I expected! This
is an easy trip for me as a teacher to organize
because of your efficient
system." Sandy Long, Monck
P.S.
"The fun the kids had while learning
and perhaps not even realizing that they are learning. Program truly justifies
and validates the trip. I look forward to
further visits and
programs." Sandy Long, Monck
P.S.
Sandy Long first brought his Grade 5's
from Monck Public School to Out to Learn and
Kinark Outdoor Centre in 2008. He finds the
program that Out to Learn coordinates and delivers
for these field trips provides a well rounded,
fun, memorable experience for his
students. Out to Learn's programs present ,in
Sandy's words, "real life applications" of
the curricula he is teaching back at
school. In addition to the preparation Sandy
does before the trip, he also draws upon
these rich field trip experiences throughout the
year. Out to Learn field trips at the Kinark
Outdoor Centre offer a wide variety
of learning experiences. Teachers can
choose a dynamic mix of ecology based
programs offered by Out to Learn and
Kinark's outdoor adventure programming for an
out-of-classroom experience that acheives several
objectives.
Students from Monck P.S participated in Out
to Learn's When It
Rains, It Pours and Bear
Essentials programs. The Bear Essentials lesson
helps acheive the learning outcomes in the
Habitats and Communities unit and helps
students understand adaptations to diet and
environment. Students use deductive
reasoning in a hands-on skull investigation and
then have fun in an interactive "Be a Bear" game
that helps them link the significance of
adaptations and habitat. "Awesome and cool"
is what we heard from Sandy and his class.
Students also enjoyed orienteering and survival
activities, as well as, a night walk and evening
campfire led by Kinark staff.
Monck P.S. has already made their
booking for 2010 ... give us a call and see what
we can do for
you!

Notes
When
you plan your field trip with Out
to Learn, consider Kinark's Indoor
and Outdoor Climbing Walls. The Indoor
Climbing Wall, a good nasty weather or evening
activity, is housed in the Eagles Nest building
and has 3 different climbs of varying levels of
challenge- straight vertical climbs, and
overhangs. Kinark's staff facilitates
personal goal setting with the each student prior
to their climb and are the primary belay person
for each climber. Students can watch and
encourage their peers as they climb through the
upper level viewing area. A very cool activity!
Out to Learn has new water quality test kits.
Testing for oxygen, phosphates, acidity, and
buffering capacity is a popular activity in
our Murky Waters and Acid
Rain programs.
Did you know that Out to
Learn's parent company Glenside
Ecological Services Ltd. won the Haliburton Highlands Land
Trust's Enviro-Heroes award for Green
Business of the Year for 2009? In
2008, Jim Mchardy, Director of the Kinark Outdoor
Centre, won Environmental Education Enviro-Hero of the
Year. What a team! Attention Envirothon teachers! Out to Learn offers
an Envirothon Preparation
Workshop to get your student team ready
for regional competitions. Call now to make your
